During this presentation you will experience firsthand what hearing loss sounds like, discover the benefits of communication strategies, and develop a greater sense of empathy, understanding, and compassion for how hearing loss impacts communication. The majority of people either know someone coping with hearing loss or are navigating hearing loss themselves.
Christy Abrams is the Hard of Hearing Specialist with the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing. Since July 2019, she has been a Charter member of Audible Talkers Toastmasters. She serves as the Sergeant at Arms for this club which is the first in the world to be accessible to its hard of hearing members.
Christy grew up in Norwich, a small town in upstate New York. She attended college at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and majored in Human Services. She has worked in the field for more than 25 years. Christy is passionate about hearing loss, effective communication, and equal access. She has been navigating a severe bilateral hearing loss since 1st grade and currently wears 2 behind the ear (BTE) power hearing aids. She lives in the Northwest Valley of Phoenix with her teenage daughter Norah and their two kittens. Christy loves road trips and her favorite escape is reading books and watching movies (with closed captions) with her dear Dad!
