           Al Melvin was born in Helena, Montana. He is an Eagle Scout. He is a graduate of the U.S.Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. He earned his MBA at Thunderbird, which is now part of ASU in Phoenix. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

For 30 years, he had a dual career in international ocean transportation and the US Naval Reserve. He retired as a Captain in 1999. He teaches logistics and international management at Pima Community Collge and Park U. at Davis Monthan AFB. He served six years in the Arizona State Senate (2009-15). He and his wife have lived in SaddleBrooke for 20 years. They have a Basset Hound and 16 Japanese Koi fish.

Su Fong has over 25 years of experience in education. She initially was a high school teacher in S. Korea and immigrated to the United States to pursue her master’s degree and doctoral degree at Arizona State University. She was a professor at ASU and went on to become an Instructional Designer and earned a second doctorate degree at Grand Canyon University. Su’s passion has been education, and she now trains educators.

Su’s faith has guided the changes in her life to be disciplined in her daily routines, serve others, and has helped her persevere when faced with adversity. Su has shared her story at GCU faculty conferences, staff meetings, and through her participation at Toastmasters.

Katrina Oase, the owner of the Legal Document Preparer, LLC., and the founder of the Englingo.com, is a big believer of Toastmasters.

Katrina jointed Executive Toastmasters in 2015 because she needed to improve her speaking and communication skills. Toastmasters offered her a community of supporters, and an environment to foster her confidence.

She loves to observe her fellow Toastmasters, from being intimidated to speak at first, and then being transformed by the program. She loves to see how her fellow Toastmasters blossomed to become competent speakers, and communicators.

Katrina Oase achieved her DTM, Distinguish Toastmaster Award in July 2020. Howard Schultz said that “when you are surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.” This is so true in Toastmasters International.

Terry Sprouse is a speaker, an author, a Lincoln-ologist, and a Toastmaster. The title of his presentation is “The Timeless Wisdom of Stories.”

Ever since reading Carl Sandburg’s “Abraham Lincoln,” which fortuitously fell into his hands as a literature-starved Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras in 1986, Terry has been captivated and inspired by this legendary figure. Terry now delivers speeches and seminars to groups about Mr. Lincoln’s storytelling, periodically turning up on radio or television interview shows. Terry has published six books and is a winner of a USA Books, National Best Book Award. He adheres to Lincoln’s motto that “A story is the shortest path between a stranger and a friend.”

Terry’s presentation is entitled “The Power of Stories.”

Paul Lewis put together several careers during his working lifetime. His last endeavor was as a Career Counselor. For five years he was the Director of Student Services at a small, private college in Chicago. He organized job fairs and helped students improve their skills in resume writing and job interviews. He pointed out job openings that meshed well with students’ skills.

Then he moved to Sierra Vista, AZ, where he was a Career Counselor at the Army installation Fort Huachuca. He worked in the office responsible for helping outgoing soldiers make the transition to civilian life. He developed job fairs and designed and led seminars in all aspects of securing a fulfilling and well-paid profession. One-on-one counseling with soldiers was an integral part of the process.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration from the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU.

Paul was a CPA with a Big 8 (now 4) Accounting firm after which he became the controller for one of the largest privately held homebuilders in Arizona. After getting his MBA, he accepted the position as president of a national design and fabrication company, leading a team of over a hundred architects, designers and craftsmen for more than 13 years.

During his time as a CPA  he also became a trainer for the Zig Ziglar “Born to Win” personal development program, teaching goal setting strategies to hundreds of individuals evenings and weekends.

In 2001 Paul resigned his position as president and devoted his energies into growing his family’s Recreational Vehicle Dealerships. Today his RV Dealerships are one of the nation’s Top 50 dealerships in the country.

Paul is now managing member of five LLCs, including his business and executive training company, The Olympic Method.

Finding a great job, one that you can be passionate about while also achieving other life goals is not easy, but with a plan and perseverance it can be achieved.

Kimberly Jansen is an Entrepreneur who specializes in all things related to dance and the arts. Kim has been a dancer for over twenty years, and has competed in Latin Ballroom and Swing. She also owns her own company, Starlight Arts. Kim uses the art of dance to inspire others to live a passionate life. Last year, Kim pursued a career change after fifteen years in the same field. Kim was diagnosed with a Learning Disability a few years ago, and is getting help for the disorder.  This has allowed her to go back to college at forty-five years old.

Heintz currently works as an attorney for the State of Arizona.  Her journey to that position began prior to her graduation from law school, including three cross country moves and many lessons learned along the way.  In her presentation, “Make Moves: Lessons Learned from an Evolving Career,” Rachel will discuss the most important things she has learned during her transition from school and her first job and subsequently switching between two different professions.

In her free time, Rachel enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling, and taking an active role in the Midtown Toast Pros Toastmasters Club.  Rachel has been a member of Toastmasters since October 2018, and currently serves as the Vice President of Public Relations for the Club.  She previously held the Position of President in the club for the 2020/2021 year.

With most of her career spent in various areas of Information Technology, Liz Ravenwood has been everything from a Computer Operator, to Production Control, to Academic Computing and Coordinating Student Computer Labs, Database Developer, and Programmer/Analyst. However, she has varying interests which resulted in Bachelor Degrees in French and Computer Science, and a Masters Degree in Linguistics with an emphasis in 2nd Language Acquisition and a TESOL Certificate (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). In mid-life she has taught ESL classes as well as College Writing. Being a curious person, her other interests along with speaking, writing, reading and classical piano; she has dabbled in karate, tai chi, drum circles, language learning, golf, and cake decorating. Currently semi-retired, she is tutoring various subjects with Varsity Tutors, involving herself with the Unitarian church activities, and playing keyboard (mostly blues) with good friends. Being a lover of nature and things of beauty, she is currently involved in understanding our climate crisis and what can be done about it.

The first unofficial Toastmasters meeting was held on March 24, 1905. Then, much like Toastmasters meetings today, participants took turns leading and speaking at each meeting.

Today, Toastmasters is an important partner for businesses and communities. Through a robust education program, Toastmasters provides opportunities to gain both experience and confidence in presentations/public speaking, and grow in leadership, knowledge, and volunteerism.
